In Memorium

We are saddened tolet you know that one of our former faculty and a true giant in the field of health services research,Kerr White, passed away last week.

A trail blazer in the health services and research arena, Dr. White devoted his career to investigating the problems of organizing, managing, financing and evaluating health services in the United States and abroad. The application of epidemiological and statistical concepts to understanding these problems was a continuing commitment, as was his deep concern with the influence of emotional and social factors on health, disease and treatments of all modalities. In addition to his research, he was dedicated to educating a new generation of health services researchers and many of his former students are leaders in the field today.

We are grateful for his tremendous contributions to public health and to our institution.Click here to read his self-penned obituary.

SGIM Responds to the Institute of Medicine's Report on GME

On July 29, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a much-anticipated report calling on Congress to overhaul Medicare's funding mechanism for graduate medical education (GME). Noting that there is "a striking absence of transparency and accountability in the GME financing system for producing the types of physicians that the nation needs," IOM report recommends that Medicare GME funding be aligned with workforce needs by combining Direct and Indirect GME funding into a single fund, with up to 30% set aside for incentives to promote this alignment.

SGIM agrees with IOM's overall goals and policy recommendations for improving GME, particularly as they relate to primary care physicians and improving the transparency and accountability of the system. But IOM's report should not be considered the final word on this topic. In Addressing the Nation's Physician Workforce Needs, published earlier this year, a panel of SGIM experts set out six recommendations which reflect the Society's core interest: namely, preparing a physician workforce capable of providing high-quality, high-value, population-based and patient-centered health care that is aligned with the changing needs of our nation's healthcare delivery system.
