Civil Rights Symposia at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI)*

Thursday, May 7, 6:00-8:00pm

This symposium will highlight the past, present and future progress of civil rights in medicine. Invited speakers include:

  • Herschell Hamilton, Jr., will speak about his father, Dr. Herschell Hamilton, Sr., the first board-certified African-American surgeon in Birmingham with clinical privileges at UAB Hospital. Mr. Hamilton and his wife have restored his father’s former office building to carry on his legacy.
  • Chris Terndrup, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, will share his experience providing care for members in the LGBTQ community and with HIV/AIDS patients.
  • Isabel Rubio, the Executive Director for the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (HICA), will speak about her organization’s advocacy efforts for local Latinos. She will discuss HICA’s broad approach to empowering members of the Latinx community, including

 A reception will follow the talks and the BCRI will be open for self-guided tours. Shuttle service will be provided between the BJCC and the BCRI.
