Dear colleagues in the New England region,

Greetings and I hope everyone is enjoying summer.

At our national meeting, several members suggested a president’s blog to help build regional connections throughout the year. This will be a quarterly blog and my goal is to keep us all informed of regional and national priorities and opportunities to collaborate on common goals. If you have suggestions for what to include, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

First, I would like to thank our wonderful regional leadership team and encourage you to reach out to any of us with thoughts and ideas for building our regional priorities. Please visit our region’s webpage for our contact information:

I would like to mention some of our top priorities for the region this year:

  1. Please spread the word: our regional meeting will be held Friday March 9, 2018 at Boston University’s George Sherman Union, 8 am – 6 pm. Our theme will highlight health advocacy and our keynote speaker is Michael Botticelli, Executive Director of the Grayken Center for Addiction Medicine at Boston Medical Center. In addition, our teaching skills retreat will take place on Thursday March 8, 2018 from 3-6 pm and will feature workshops on educational scholarship. We look forward to another fantastic meeting with participation from all of you and your trainees! Stay tuned for submission deadlines in late fall/ early winter.

  1. Institutional Champions – we are looking for individuals from each institution in our region to work with us to engage faculty, students and residents from every institution. Our goal is to have both faculty and resident champions collaborating to make SGIM even stronger. Our region will be richer the more participation we have. Please contact me by July 17th if you are interested. Champions will receive a toolkit and support from the leadership team on ways to engage colleagues and will be invited to a unique networking event the evening before our regional meeting. I envision this to be a one year commitment that will turn over after the regional meeting.

  1.    Opportunities for healthcare advocacy – A critical concern for many of our members is how to learn about opportunities to engage effectively in health advocacy, especially in our current political climate. As your president, this is not an area of expertise, but is an area of great interest for me. Building on the lunchtime open forum that Tracy Rabin, Utibe Essien and others led at our 2017 regional meeting, we have created a new GIM Connect community to continue the conversation. All who are interested are welcome to join. Please click here to join the New England Region Advocacy group. Also, please click here to answer three brief questions about your interest so that we can get a sense of where our members’ interests lie.

  1. Leadership Opportunities -- We are always seeking new members to join our leadership team! It's a great way to get involved in regional and national SGIM, learn about organizational priorities, and network with terrific colleagues across the region. Stay tuned for more information as we approach regional elections this coming winter. Many regional leaders have continued to serve SGIM by assuming national leadership roles and our region has incredible experts in a variety of academic and healthcare areas.

I am very proud to be a part our New England Region! We are one of the largest and most active regions in SGIM. With the help of our leadership team, I hope to do my part to deepen our already strong ties and help us all to derive maximal professional satisfaction from our SGIM participation this year. I look forward to working with all of you over the next nine months and beyond.

Best,

Catherine
