Dear Colleagues,

I am really enjoying getting to know more people in the region as I work with our leadership team to develop our meeting agenda. Here are some exciting developments in the region.

  1. Preparations are well underway for our regional meeting on Friday, March 9th in Boston with the theme of "The Many Faces of Physician Advocacy: Internists Leading the Way for Change." The call for submissions is open and will remain open until November 16th. We welcome submissions from all trainees as well as faculty. We aim to have an array of sessions addressing the theme from various angles including education, research and clinical medicine, and will have several offerings that help us develop our advocacy voice and hone our advocacy skills.
  2. Our high quality educational scholarship retreat will be on Thursday, March 8 from 3-6 pm at Boston Medical Center. We moved the time from Saturday to make it more convenient to attend. Organized by Gina Luciano, the retreat will offer 2 workshops:
  • Building your educator's portfolio for promotion
  • How to give a great workshop

Workshop #2 is eligible for TEACH credit!  For more information about the SGIM TEACH Program go to:

www.sgim.org/communities/education/sgim-teach-program

The workshops are geared toward early to mid-career educators and are also perfect for Chief Residents.

  1. Please help us welcome and involve trainees in the meeting. Now is the time to start arranging schedules to allow residents to attend on March 9th. The regional meeting is a great way for students and residents to learn more about GIM and be stimulated by the rich career possibilities and by our vibrant community. We will have specific offerings geared to trainees around career mentoring. #ProudtobeGIM.
  2. This year we aim to engage more hospitalists in joining our SGIM family. We have reached out to many of you - thank you to our new institutional champions! We welcome any and all to submit workshops and abstracts that are relevant to hospitalist medicine. Please let myself or one of our leadership team members know if you have thoughts on ways to make our meeting and community a meaningful place for hospitalists.
  3. Thank you to all who have stepped forward to be institutional champions! Our goal is to have representation from all institutions in our region. We are well on our way but are always looking for volunteers. Champions will help us engage trainees and faculty in contributing submissions and ideas for the regional meeting, as well as helping us to shape our regional agenda going forward.
  4. Last but not least, I want to mention a few exciting innovations related to this year's meeting:

-- First we will have a meeting app for your phone or tablet, similar to the one used at national. This was recently piloted at the Midwest meeting with great results. In addition to reducing our use of paper at the meeting, it will enable us to streamline communication around any updates to the agenda and/or poster session. Also, poster scoring and session and meeting evaluations will be done directly through the app. (For those who want to, evaluations can still be done on the website).

-- This year we are offering trainee scholarships at the New England Regional Meeting. We hope this announcement will stimulate interest amongst trainees in submitting to regional. More details to follow.

I wish you all a healthy, happy fall. And I want to take this opportunity to say what a great experience it is working with all of you. . . If you haven't already, consider getting involved!

Best,

Catherine
