"A comprehensive analysis of 50 years of breast cancer research was published on April 1 in JAMAby researchers at Harvard Medical School's Department of Health Care Policy and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.SGIM'er Dr. Nancy Keating, co-author of the report, who is an associate professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, says their analysis indicates mammography guidelines should be based on each individual patient's complete health profile, such as family and medical history, genetic risk factors and overall life expectancy."

Lisa A. Cooper, MD, FACP, has been awarded the James D. Bruce Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Preventive Medicine from the American College of Physicians (ACP).

 

A resident of Clarksville, Maryland, Dr. Cooper is the James F. Fries Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of the NIH-funded Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities.

 

The James D. Bruce Memorial Award was established by ACP's Board of Regents in 1946 and is bestowed for distinguished contributions in preventive medicine.

 

Dr. Cooper is an internationally recognized epidemiologist and health services researcher. She has developed interventions that enhance patient-physician communication, reduce disparities in healthcare delivery, and improve patient health outcomes. A 2007 recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award, Dr. Cooper has also been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

AAMC has launched the 2014 Health Equity Research Snapshot.The Snapshot is a collection of engaging and informative video clips that highlight seven new research projects underway at AAMC member institutions. The videos were produced by the investigators and their teams, and represent research on a wide array of health outcomes and populations. They showcase the role academic medical centers play in understanding and eliminating health disparities.
