SGIM Announces New Tagline:

Creating Value for Patients

Many thanks to all of the SGIM members who suggested ideas for SGIM's new tagline, "Creating Value for Patients."The idea for the tagline ultimately came from Robert Baron's speech at the 2013 annual meeting plenary session in Denver.

Look for the new logo and tagline on future SGIM publications and read an article by President Eric Bass on the tagline in the August issue of Forum.

SGIM Announces 2013 Post Annual Meeting Award Recipients

The SGIM is pleased to announce the recipients of the awards based on peer review of scientific presentations at our Annual Meeting.

Each year, panels of SGIM member volunteers attend our Workshops and conduct peer reviews. Those evaluations were used to determine the following award recipients.

David E. Rogers - Jr. Faculty Workshop Awards

  • Carlin Senter, MD, University of California, San Francisco "The Diagnosis-Driven Physical Exam of the Knee and Shoulder: A Hands-On Workshop"
  • Gwen Crevensten, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital "Managing Admissions and Readmissions: A Multi-Institutional Review of Current Practices and Innovations"
  • Patrick T. Lee, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital "RePlay Health": A Serious Game for Understanding US Health System Dynamics and Policy Interventions"

Exemplary Clinical Workshop Award - Outstanding clinically focused workshop - Jennifer Corbelli, MD, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center "Is Pregnancy a Stress Test? The AHA Guidelines for Prevention of CVD in Women: A Woman's Heart.

Also determined post meeting are the Women's Health Awards. Volunteer members from the Women and Medicine Task Force attend Workshops and Presentation Sessions at the Annual Meeting and submit evaluations of those that are Women's Health-based. Those evaluations were used to determine these award recipients.

Women's Health Oral Abstract Award - Sonya Borrero, MD, University of Pittsburgh "Contraceptive adherence among women Veterans: Differences by race/ethnicity and contraceptive supply"


Women's Health Poster Award - Wendy Bennett, MD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University "Predictors of postpartum primary care utilization for women with medically complicated pregnancies: An analysis of medical claims data"

News from the Regions

MIDWEST
Save the date, Midwest SGIM! The 2013 Midwest SGIM Regional Meeting will be held on September 12-13, 2013 at the Navy Pier in Chicago, IL. This year's theme is "Accountable Care: Linking Research and Education to Clinical Practice" and our Keynote Speaker is Dr. Anne G. Pereira, Director of Graduate Medical Education at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Midwest SGIM, the deadline for submissions is now closed. If you submitted to the meeting, acceptance and non-acceptance notifications are set to go out on Wednesday, July 31st to the Corresponding Author of the submission. RSVP for your presentations are due mid-to-late August.

The Midwest Leadership Board is seeking nominations for President-Elect for the upcoming 2013-2014 year. The nomination deadline is Wednesday, August 14th, with online voting occurring between August 16th - August 28th. We want to award the "Best of the Midwest"! The Call for Award Nominations is now underway. Awards for Clinician-Educator, Advocacy and Community Service, and Leader in GIM are being offered. Deadline for award nominations is Wednesday, August 14th. Instructions for online nomination and further information can be found in the 2013 Call for Awards Nominations link at www.sgim.org/go/midwest.

Registration is now open, Midwest SGIM! Navy Pier's Festival Hall in Chicago, IL will again host the Midwest SGIM Regional Meeting over the dates of September 12-13, 2013. Registration deadline is Wednesday, September 4th, 2013. Please see the "Registration" page of our regional website for more information on how to register for the meeting.

Planning your travel and stay in Chicago for the Midwest SGIM regional meeting? Our host hotel for lodging is the W Hotel Chicago-Lakeshore, which is the closest hotel to our meeting venue. Reservation deadline is Thursday, August 16th at 5:00 pm CST through the W Hotel's reservation system. For further information on reservations and directions, please see the "Hotel and Travel" page on the Midwest regional website.

MOUNTAIN WEST
Save the date, Mountain West SGIM! The 2013 Mountain West Regional Meeting will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Anschutz Medical Campus at University of Colorado in Denver, CO. More details to follow in the coming weeks, including Registration and Hotel/Travel information.

Call for Workshop, Abstract, Vignette, and Innovation Submissions are now open! Deadline to submit is Friday, August 9th. Please visit the Mountain West region's "Call for Submissions" page of our website at for further information.

Calling all volunteers! The Mountain West SGIM Planning Committee is seeking volunteer reviewers for Workshop, Abstract, Innovation and Vignette review committees. If you are interested in helping with this year's meeting and are a current Mountain West SGIM member, please email Danielle Josef, SGIM Regional Coordinator, at JosefD@sgim.org no later than Tuesday, August 6th and make sure specify which committee you are interested in reviewing for. Time commitment for reviewing is any time between August 13th and August 26th.

CALIFORNIA-HAWAII
Save the date, California-Hawaii SGIM! The 2014 SGIM Regional Meeting is currently scheduled for Friday, January 31st, 2014 at Stanford University's Li Ka Shing Center in Palo Alto, CA. This year's theme is "Innovation in General Medicine - Creating A Better Version of Health Care" and our Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Abraham Verghese, Professor of Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford and Senior Associate Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. More details to follow in the coming weeks, including Call for Submissions and Registration information.


NORTHWEST
Save the date, Northwest SGIM! The 2014 Northwest Regional Meeting will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 in Seattle, WA. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

SOUTHERN
Save the date, Southern SGIM! The 2014 Southern SGIM Regional Meeting is currently scheduled for February 20-22. 2014 in New Orleans, LA. More details to follow in the coming weeks, including the Call for Submissions and Registration information.

MID-ATLANTIC
Save the date, Mid-Atlantic SGIM! The 2014 Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

NEW ENGLAND
Save the date, New England SGIM! The 2014 New England Regional Meeting will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center located on the Harvard University campus in Boston, MA. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Donate to the Brancati Mentorship and Leadership Award

The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and Association of Chiefs and Leaders in GIM (ACLGIM) are calling for donations for The Frederick L. Brancati Mentorship and Leadership Award, in memory of a much respected and beloved member and past president of ACLGIM.

This award is intended to help transmit Dr. Brancati's love of GIM to the next generation of leaders in GIM by recognizing such junior faculty and provide support for their trainees who aspire to become leaders in the transformation of health care through innovations in research, education, and practice.

National Grand Rounds Series - Free Webinar, August 5

The National Grand Rounds (NGR) series is part of the Partnership to Advance Conflict-free Medical Education (PACME), a three-year initiative to identify and promote best practices aimed at reducing conflicts of interest with the pharmaceutical industry. Key partners in the PACME initiative include the NPA, American Medical Student Association, Community Catalyst, and the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Our next National Grand Rounds, "Value-Based Prescribing: What Drives Physician Behavior?" will be webcast on Monday, August 5, 2013 from 7-8pm (EST) / 4-5pm (PST).

Speakers will include Richard J. Baron, MD, President & CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine; Maureen Bisognano, President and CEO, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; and Cheryl Bettigole, MD, MPH, President of the National Physicians Alliance (moderator).

SGIM Member Brian L. Strom, M.D., M.P.H. has been appointed

as the inaugural Chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), effective December 2, 2013.

Dr. Strom is an internationally recognized scholar, an award-winning educator, and a visionary academic leader, and his deep understanding of the 21st-century medical education landscape make him the ideal chancellor to establish RBHS as a model for research and education in the biomedical and health sciences.
