SGIM 37th Annual Meeting

April 23-26, 2014, San Diego, CA

Thinking about submitting a workshop, updates or interest group?

The Call for Submissions will be mailed next week; the deadline to submit is October 9.

What's new this year?

Workshop submissions require you to identify deliverables. You get to identify more than just the submission category - you can identify what track(s) you feel your session best fits.Updates will be submitted and peer reviewed, not invited as in the past.

Interest Groups, as always, must be submitted or space to meet will not be assigned.

Bottom Line Evidence Summaries

The Bottom Line Evidence Summaries are a new feature now available through JGIM's Web-only section. The Evidence Based Medicine Task Force is creating distilled, one page summaries around high impact research in general medicine, as a tool to help doctors communicate results to patients. The simplest way to view the current summaries is to go to http://www.sgim.org/web-onlyand check the box for the Bottom Line. The first three preliminary summaries are posted, covering topics of Mammography screening for breast cancer, Lung cancer screening, and Lorcaserin for weight loss, with more available soon. Click "download PDF" to see the full summary. Look for upcoming posts on the Mediterranean diet for cardiovascular disease, Vitamin D and calcium for prevention of fractures, and Fish oil and prostate cancer.

For those of you active on Twitter and other media, we would most appreciate a shout out!

Funding Opportunities

PCORI

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) on Wednesday announced that it is on track to spend over $400 million on research awards in 2013. PCORI Executive Director Dr. Joe Selbey said, "We've awarded $88.6 million already this year through the broad funding announcements tied to our national research priorities and committed another $30 million through a topic-specific announcement on preventing fall-related injuries in older adults. Between September and December, we plan to approve up to an additional $300 million for patient-centered outcomes research projects." PCORI has posted additional funding allocation data on its web page.

NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) would like to share some important information with various partners that interact with medical (MD and DO) students. The 2014 Students to Service (S2S) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) application cycle will open soon.

To be eligible for the S2S LRP, applicants must currently be enrolled as a full-time student in their last year of an eligible allopathic or osteopathic degree program at a fully accredited school, and planning to complete an accredited primary medical care residency in an NHSC-approved specialty (internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry and geriatrics). In addition, applicants should be interested in working with under-served communities in high need areas throughout the U.S. or its Territories.

The S2S LRP is expected to be competitive, and applicants are encouraged to begin the application process early. On average it takes approximately 3 weeks to complete an application. While several documents will be required to submit a completed application, we would encourage applicants planning to apply to begin obtaining the required loan verification and supplemental documentation, letters of recommendation and an official school transcript.

If you any questions, please contact the Customer Care Center at 1-800-221-9393, from Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., ET (except federal holidays).

AHRQ Names New Director

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced that Richard Kronick, Ph.D., will become the next Director of AHRQ upon Carolyn Clancy's departure later this month. Dr. Kronick joined the Department in January 2010 as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, overseeing the Office of Health Policy.

In that role, he has conducted and coordinated research on policies relating to public health; health care delivery; health insurance; and health care financing programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, State Children's Health Insurance Program, and private insurance coverage. His work, and that of the Office of Health Policy under his leadership, has been integral to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, his team has provided insight and information critical to our effort to improve the health of the nation.

Prior to joining HHS, Dr. Kronick conducted health policy research in academia as well as in federal and state government, including as Director of Policy and Reimbursement for the Medicaid Division of the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare, and most recently, as a Professor and Chief of the Division of Health Care Sciences in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. "AHRQ has important work ahead, and I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Kronick in this new role," Secretary Sebelius said in a statement.
