Welcome to 2014 and the new layout for eNews!  In the coming issues you'll see some new integration with social media and with GIM Connect (SGIM's member portal) but don't worry--you'll also see information that you need as an SGIM member, from updates on the annual meeting to news from the regions to SGIM members in the news.  Happy New Year!

ANNUAL MEETING ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING SIGN UP

Each year, SGIM offers associates and faculty a valuable opportunity to meet with a senior SGIM mentor from a different institution at the Annual Meeting.

Women and Medicine Task Force Career Advising Program (CAP)

At the 2014 Annual Meeting, SGIM's Women and Medicine Task Force will once again sponsor its Career Advising Program (CAP), a longitudinal mentoring initiative to help female junior faculty navigate the academic promotion process. Advising focuses on CV preparation, targeted committee membership, and strategies for relationship-building with external letter writers. Learn more.

SGIM Members in the News

Congratulations to SGIM member and former ALCGIM president, Karen DeSalvo, who has been named the next National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the Department of Health and Human Services.Dr. DeSalvo most recentlyserved as the City of New Orleans Health Commissioner and Senior Health Policy Advisor to Mayor Mitch Landrieu.Congrats Karen!




This leadership development program is designed for junior-mid career faculty (e.g. 5-8 years into faculty appointment) who hold some kind of leadership role and wish to further develop their leadership skills, through training and coaching from successful GIM leaders at the ACLGIM/SGIM spring meeting and in the year following. Participants for the program will be chosen via a competitive peer-review application process. The applicant must be committed to attending the ACLGIM Hess Leadership and Management Institute on April 23, 2014 and the SGIM national meeting April 24-26, 2014 in San Diego, California, with a dedicated leadership track and events designed for LEAD participants. Participation also entails independent readings/assignments, online discussion, and regularly scheduled direct communication with an ACLGIM leadership mentor in the year following this meeting.

Last Day to Nominate or Apply for an SGIM Award or Grant!

The nominations and applications period for the 2014 Annual Meeting Awards and Grants ends tomorrow night Friday, January 10th at midnight.Technical support for your submission is available Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm Eastern time. Recipients will be acknowledged in April at the 2014 SGIM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.



Register Now to Attend SGIM's Hill Day
March 11-12, 2014 in Washington, DC

Join SGIM in Washington, DC to advocate on behalf of GIM.Hill Day events will begin with an orientation for first-time participants at 4pm on March 11. At 5:30 SGIM will host a small reception where we will hear from Fitzhugh S. M. Mullan, MD, Murdock Head Professor of Medicine and Health Policy at the George Washington University School of Public Health & Health Services, who will speak on this year's main theme: GME Reform. We'll meet up on March 12 at the Rayburn House Office Building for a small briefing and breakfast before making scheduled Congressional visits.

Join the New Health Policy Outreach Committee

The Outreach Subcommittee of the SGIM Health Policy Committee is seeking new members interested in educating and engaging the general SGIM membership on issues related to health policy. Specifically, we are looking for members to help build our communication materials, which could include developing educational/advocacy resources for the SGIM Health Policy committee websiteor compiling a health policy curriculum that could be used by SGIM members. This would be a great opportunity for associate or junior faculty members interested in becoming more active with the health policy committee! Only 3 weeks left to register, Northwest SGIM! Registration deadline is Wednesday, January 29th, 2014. Please see the "Registration" page of our regional website for more information on how to register for the meeting.

SOUTHERN
Less than two weeks for award nominations, Southern SGIM! Award nominations deadline is Monday, January 20th, 2014. Don't wait to nominate your favorite member for the Senior Leader and Mentor in GIM and Clinician Educator Award.

Two weeks left for leadership nominations. Leadership nominations deadline is Thursday, January 23rd, 2014. There is still time to nominate a member for the position of President-Elect!

One month left to register, Southern SGIM! Registration deadline is Tuesday, February 11th, 2014. Please see the "Registration" page of our regional website for more information on how to register for the meeting.
Calling all residents, fellows, and medical students! Don't forget to sign up to be a mentee at the panel mentoring session. Deadline to sign up to be a mentee is Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 Please contact regions@sgim.org if you are interested.

Attention Residents and Medical Students: Don't' forget to sign up for SSGIM Jeopardy 2014! Deadline is Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 and the competition is limited to the first SIX teams. Go to http://bit.ly/TYEdXF to register before all the spots are taken.

NEW ENGLAND
Less than three weeks left for award nominations, New England SGIM! Award nominations deadline is Monday, January 27th, 2014. Don't wait to nominate your favorite member for the Clinician Investigator and Clinician Educator Award.

5 days left for leadership nominations. Leadership nominations deadline is Monday, January 13th, 2014. There is still time to nominate a member for the position of President-Elect.

MID-ATLANTIC
One month left for award nominations, Mid-Atlantic SGIM! Award nominations deadline is Monday, February 3rd, 2014. Don't wait to nominate your favorite member for the Community Service and Advocacy, Clinician Investigator, and Clinician Educator.

Leadership nominations deadline is Wednesday, February 12th, 2014. There is still time to nominate a member for the positions of President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer-Elect, Membership Chair-Elect, and Associate Member.
