Women and Medicine Task Force Career Advising Program (CAP)

 

At the 2014 Annual Meeting, SGIM's Women and Medicine Task Force will once again sponsor its Career Advising Program (CAP), a longitudinal mentoring initiative to help female junior faculty navigate the academic promotion process. Advising focuses on CV preparation, targeted committee membership, and strategies for relationship-building with external letter writers. Be sure to sign up my March 12th!Learn more.

Veterans Affairs Information

The VA has new pre-approval requirements for all VA employees using VA dollars to attend external meetings. If you intend to use VA funds to attend the SGIM Annual Meeting, you must do the following by Tuesday, February 18th by 5 pm ET (note, this new guidance does NOT apply to VA employees who are using University or other non-VA funds to attend SGIM meetings).

1. Obtain local approval and funding confirmation from your supervisor prior to pre-registering your "intent to attend" an external conference.
2. Go to VA's Attendance and Cost Estimation System (ACES) website and pre-register your "intent to attend"
3. You will receive email notification that your "intent" to attend the conference was submitted in ACES. Reminder: This email is NOT approval to attend. Additional notification is sent once participation is approved.

4. Await notification of approval or disapproval via email. Register to attend the external conference ONLY after approval from VHA is received.

VA employees will now be able to pay registration fees by PURCHASE ORDER-our system will be set up to accept POs within the next week.Contact dunnel@sgim.org if you have questions.



New JGIM Editorial Board Members Needed

The JGIM Editorial Board is currently looking to fill five vacancies for editorial board members.One slot is specifically reserved for an associate member and we are looking for representation for the other slots from the following fields:

  • health services research
  • women's health
  • PCMH
  • geriatrics
  • research training
  • health disparities

The deadline to apply is March 3, 2014.

To apply, please view the entire set of Editorial Board Responsibilitiesand then send 1-2 page letter of intent and current CV to Francine Jetton, indicating for which position you wish to be considered (associate or full member).




This leadership development program is designed for junior-mid career faculty (e.g. 5-8 years into faculty appointment) who hold some kind of leadership role and wish to further develop their leadership skills, through training and coaching from successful GIM leaders at the ACLGIM/SGIM spring meeting and in the year following.Participants for the program will be chosen via a competitive peer-review application process. The applicant must be committed to attending the ACLGIM Hess Leadership and Management Institute on April 23, 2014 and the SGIM national meeting April 24-26, 2014 in San Diego, California, with a dedicated leadership track and events designed for LEAD participants. Participation also entails independent readings/assignments, online discussion, and regularly scheduled direct communication with an ACLGIM leadership mentor in the year following this meeting.

PCORI Issues Funding Announcements Offering Up To $206 Million in Research Support

PCORI is pleased to announce the latest round of research funding opportunities, offering up to $206 million to support comparative effectiveness research (CER) designed to answer the health and healthcare questions of greatest concern to patients and other healthcare stakeholders.

PCORI has begun accepting proposals for patient-centered outcomes studies through eight PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs).The deadline for required Letters of Intent for each of these PFAs is 5 p.m. (ET) Friday, March 7. LOIs for the pragmatic studies, transitional care,obesity, and improving methods PFAs will be reviewed for how well they fit with our programmatic goals; applicants will be notified whether they are invited to submit full applications. Information on other key dates is included in each PFA.

PCORI will host informational town hall and training webinars for interested applicants in February and March. More information is available here.

Members in the News

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) today welcomed former SGIM Council Member Alicia Fernandez, MD, as the newest member of its Board of Governors.

 

Fernandez, a professor of clinical medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and attending physician at San Francisco General Hospital, was named by the U.S. Comptroller General to fill one of the seven Board slots representing healthcare providers. The 21 members of the Board represent a wide range of health and healthcare stakeholders, including patients and healthcare consumers, per PCORI's authorizing legislation.

Valerie E. Stone, MD, MPH (another former SGIM Council member!) has been selected to be the next Chair of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital and the Charles S. Davidson Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Stone has been a highly valued member of the MGH community since she joined the Department of Medicine in 2001.Dr. Stone will start her new role in May, 2014.Congratulations Valerie!
