  • Symposia Deadline

On behalf of SGIM: On behalf of the 2017 Annual Meeting Program Committee, we are reaching out to solicit proposals for Invited Content to be presented as special symposia for the meeting in Washington, DC, April 19-22, 2017. The 2017 meeting theme is Resilience & Grit: Pursuing Organizational Change & Preventing Burnout in GIM. Submissions received by the deadline will be considered for scheduling as special symposia; indicating they are invited sessions. Special symposia will be 60 minutes long, didactic in method and are an opportunity to invite speakers to the meeting from diverse disciplines who might represent new and innovative approaches to the work we do. We expect symposia to be of interest to a large number of attendees, and they will be scheduled in rooms for 200-300 people. Sessions that include small group discussions are not appropriate and should be submitted for peer review as workshops. Our goal is to accept and schedule ten (10) symposia. The Annual Meeting Program Committee will evaluate these proposals based on their quality, fit with the meeting theme, and alignment with initiatives and goals from SGIM Council, as well as the availability of meeting space. SGIM Council’s current initiatives and priorities include improving the work environment for general internists/primary care physicians; creating sustainable, cost-effective primary care models; and promoting career development of all members of the Society. Important note about speakers: The SGIM annual meeting is conducted without commercial funding. We do NOT provide honoraria for presenters, including invited Special Symposia speakers. All presenters (for invited AND peer-reviewed content) are required to register and pay registration fees for the meeting and pay their expenses for travel, lodging, and food. The ScholarOne submission will require submitting authors to acknowledge awareness of this policy. Please email the following information no later than August 18 to Sarajane Garten (GartenS@sgim.org): Title of symposium Expected speaker(s) Identify the person that will enter the session into the ScholarOne system (if accepted) A one- or two-paragraph summary of the session’s content Session learning objectives The Program Committee will review these email submissions, and we will notify you by September 14 whether the submitted suggestion will be scheduled as a Special Symposium. This schedule will allow ample time for those not selected as Special Symposia to be submitted as workshop proposals in the Annual Meeting’s standard peer-review process. If selected, a full application will be due to ScholarOne by October 12, 2016. Thank you.
