The next Cancer Researcher in Focus is Craig Pollack, MD, MHS . His research focuses on the organization of cancer care, cancer disparities, and the social determinants of health. Dr. Pollack’s primary appointment is in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins; he is the co-director of the GIM Fellowship Program at Hopkins. In 2011, a paper of his and colleagues showed that the treatment for localized prostate cancer varied according to the racial composition of the hospital where the treatment took place. Dr. Nekhlyudov is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and a general internist at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Her work, which has generated numerous publications , centers on the quality of life and quality of care of cancer survivors. One recent paper published this year highlights the use of integrated healthcare delivery systems as platforms for cancer survivorship research. Another reports on patients' communication experiences during cancer care and provides a foundation for the design and testing of patient reporting systems. Hello fellow cancer researchers! It was wonderful meeting everyone at SGIM in Denver. One of the comments heard more than once at our meeting, and reinforced by our guest scholar Dr. Taplin, was that we need to become more aware of each other's research, both to know about collaboration and funding opportunities, and to advocate for funding for the kinds of cancer research we are interested in from NCI and other organizations.
