Bio

David Callender, MD, MPH is a general internist with a focus on public health, leadership, and medical education. He is an assistant professor of medicine, and board-certified in internal medicine.

He is a Virginia native and attended James Madison University, where he was valedictorian of the College of Math and Sciences. He earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School where he was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha. Callender served more than seven years as an active-duty physician reaching the rank of major. His training includes an internal medicine residency in Honolulu, Hawaii and additional graduate study at the University of Massachusetts, where he received a Master of Public Health degree and a Global Health Certificate.

Callender is the Medical Director at University Medical Associates, the largest primary care clinic at UVA. He joined the University of Virginia faculty in 2018 after spending three years as a physician at the United States Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil.  Callender has been recognized for clinical care and teaching multiple times including such awards as the 2021 UVA Department of Medicine Clinical Excellence Award, 2014 Moser Award for best Army internist from the American College of Physicians and the 2015 James J. Leonard Award for teaching internal medicine from the Uniformed Services University.

Callender has two children, Anna (12) and Miles (9), and two Labrador retrievers, Mazie (1) and Koa (12). He loves running, playing soccer, and hiking.  He is an avid Wahoo fan and can be found at various sporting events throughout the year.
