Staff Physician at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His research has focused on hypertension, improving patients’ self management of chronic disease and understanding physician decision making regarding the care of common chronic conditions. His current funded work engages community members in peer support of improved self management of obesity and improved use of MyHealtheVet, a VHA health portal. In the past, he performed seminal work on the use of claims data to describe patterns and outcomes of surgical care of common cancers in community settings, racial disparities in cardiovascular procedure use, and quality of care. His work has been funded by the VA, the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Health Services Resource Administration and the American Heart Association. He has led studies that relied on a variety of research methods, including randomized trials of interventions, secondary analysis of administrative and research data, chart review, and surveys and semi-structured interviews of patients and providers. He is active clinically, providing general internal medicine care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. He has practical expertise in the issues affecting provider behavior in clinical settings, since he directed the internal medicine clinics at the Kansas University Medical Center during his tenure as Director of Geriatrics and General Medicine at that institution. He founded and directs that Practice Based Research Network associated with the Clinical translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin. The Southeast Wisconsin Alliance for Translating Research into Practice (SWATRP) was established in 2011 and has been included in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality registry of such networks since 2012.
