I received my BS and MD from Northwestern University, graduating from medical school in 1980. After completing internship (Medical Center Hospital of Vermont) and residency (Oregon Health & Sciences University) training, I did the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I completed an MPH in epidemiology and PhD in education. I returned to OHSU in 1993 to work on curriculum development for the School of Medicine and do education, measurement, and health services research. I developed the Physicians Reactions to Uncertainty scales and did research that informed collaborative care models for patients with mental health and chronic pain seen in primary care. I served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, Treasurer of SGIM, and chair of the Philanthropy Committee. I have two adult sons, and in my spare time, I enjoy traveling, hiking, theater, and spending time with family and friends.
