Bio

Dr. Elnicki is a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM).  He received his MD from UPSOM and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Rochester.  He later completed a general internal medicine fellowship at the University of North Carolina.

Prior to returning to Pittsburgh, he was on the faculty at West Virginia University School of Medicine for 10 years. While there, he served as director of the Medicine Clerkship and the Evidence Based Medicine Course.  He served on the Faculty Senate and chaired the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee.

After returning to the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Elnicki was the chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. He directed the Combined Ambulatory Medicine and Pediatrics Clerkship at UPSOM. He served as the chair of the Academy of Master Educators.  At our Institute for Clinical Research and Education (ICRE), Dr. Elnicki has directed courses in Medical Writing and the Assessment of Learners.

In the School of Medicine, he has served in several roles. As Director of International Medical Education Programs, he has been instrumental in constructing the curriculum for the Nazarbayev University School of Medicine in Kazakhstan.  He has also worked with medical schools in Spain, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. He chaired and served on several committees as part of our curricular reform effort. As part of the UPSOM curriculum reform, Dr. Elnicki has assumed the role of Director of Medical Student Assessment.

Nationally, he has served as chair of the AAMC’s Research in Medical Education (RIME) committee. He was President of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) and served on the Board of the Alliance in Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM). He served on and chaired several committees for the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has served as an associate editor and on the editorial board for the Journal of General Internal Medicine and is now editor in chief. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians.

He teaches and mentors students, residents and fellows and has received numerous awards for both teaching and research in medical education. Among them are SGIM’s lifetime achievement in medical education, the UPSOM Schuit Master Educator and CDIM’s educational research and service awards.

In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, hunting, fishing, beer and wine making.
