Bio

Marcel Salive is a medical officer in the Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology at the NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA) where he has dedicated 15 years of service.  He developed and oversees an innovative and successful research program on multimorbidity in older adults including national consortia, pragmatic clinical trials, clinical research projects and career development. He has developed NIA’s program to conduct research into improving the effectiveness of treatment strategies for the comorbid conditions that occur frequently in combination with Alzheimer’s disease.  Early in his career he was a tenured senior intramural research epidemiologist at NIA and conducted studies of health promotion and the prevention of disease, disability and frailty in aging.  He has senior-level experience in multiple health agencies including the NIH, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has made major regulatory and reimbursement contributions to public health.  From 2003-2010, he was Director of the Division of Medical and Surgical Services, one of two clinical divisions within CMS responsible for Medicare coverage of therapy, medicine, surgery, anesthesia, radiology and preventive services, which comprise more than 40% of Medicare spending.  He managed the development of 50 evidence-based national coverage policies on topics including orthopedics, cardiology, rehabilitation, and preventive services. He initiated and subsequently expanded Medicare coverage of smoking cessation behavior change, and later led an expansion of prevention coverage that put it on par with diagnostic and treatment services in Medicare.
