Special Sessions at SGIM23

SGIM Community Forum

Thursday, May 11, 2023, 10:20 am - 11:50 am

Across the country, legislators are instituting policies that threaten the health and welfare of the communities we serve and restrict our abilities to achieve a just health system more than at any other time in recent history. At our first every SGIM Community Forum, we will strategize about how SGIM can support members who live and work in states with policies that conflict with the Society’s vision of a just system of care in which all people can achieve optimal health.
This session will be moderated by SGIM’s current president, Dr. LeRoi Hicks. Our panelists, Dr. Marshall Chin, Dr. Giselle Corbie, Dr. Elizabeth Jacobs, and Dr. Matthew Wynia, represent a diversity of viewpoints, areas of expertise, and SGIM regional experiences. After brief remarks from panelists, the entire session will engage in an interactive discussion about the tools we can use as individuals and as a Society to protect our patients and support our personal and professional values.

Please join our Malcolm L. Peterson lecturer Dr. Nakela Cook (Executive Director at the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)), as she joins SGIM members who serve or have served in local and national government roles for a special mentoring panel about Careers in Government and Medicine. Our panelists, Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, Dr. David Atkins, and Dr. Judy Zerzan-Thul, represent diverse voices and viewpoints from a variety of career stages, government agencies, geographic regions, and underrepresented groups in medicine. During this panel, they will discuss pathways to and the challenges and the opportunities of a career in government. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to ask your questions of these leaders in medicine!
